Lidl is set to release a 27-piece Lupilu Shop Till Set for £8.09 on Thursday, October 8, offering parents a budget-friendly alternative to pricier wooden till toys at Tesco and John Lewis. The set is available at 10% off for Lidl Plus members, or £8.99 for regular shoppers.
Features and materials
The 27-piece shopping set is made from real wood and hard-wearing plastic. The wooden parts contain 100% FSC-certified wood. Lidl says the toy "helps children develop creativity and imagination through role play".
The till includes an integrated calculator, a card reader, and a handheld scanner that emits real light and sound effects. Built from certified sustainable wood and durable plastic, the set comes fully equipped with play money, receipts, and product cards, allowing children to dive straight into a realistic shopping game.
Comparison with Tesco and John Lewis
For those who like the look of Tesco's £49.99 Goki Wooden Cash Till, but would prefer sticking to a budget, Lidl's £8 offering could be a more affordable alternative. The £50 option caters to families looking for a more traditional, mechanical toy. While it also features a fully functional calculator, its handheld scanner uses a simple, battery-free squeaker rather than electronic lights. A unique feature of the Goki model is its replaceable paper till roll, which lets children simulate printing real receipts.
Lidl's Shop Till Set is also conceptually similar to John Lewis' Wooden Cash Register, but Lidl leans into digital play, while John Lewis embraces a traditional, mechanical design. Both toys are crafted for children aged three and older using FSC-certified wood.
Educational benefits
Both toys are designed to help teach early numeracy, social interaction, and fine motor skills through role-play. It is ultimately up to shoppers to decide what design and price they prefer.
Lidl adds: "Plastic handheld scanner with light and sound effects, calculator function, and integrated card reader. Drawer with four compartments, including play money, a credit card and four product cards. Button cell batteries included. Age recommendation: three years plus. Three-year warranty."
