Lidl's £34.99 Pumpkin Casserole Rivals Le Creuset's £315 Version

Lidl is set to launch a new cast iron pumpkin casserole dish on Thursday, October 1, priced at £34.99, which closely resembles Le Creuset's £315 Cast Iron Pumpkin Shallow Casserole. The budget-friendly option offers shoppers potential savings of approximately £280.

Product Details and Availability

The 2L Cast Iron Casserole Dish will be available in Lidl's Middle Aisle selection, which is refreshed every Thursday and Sunday. According to Lidl's product description, the dish is "Ideal for cooking and serving meat joints and poultry. Easy-care, durable enamel coating. Even heat distribution and long-lasting heat retention."

The casserole is oven safe up to 260°C, suitable for all hob types including induction, and has a usable capacity of 2L, a base thickness of 5mm, and an inner size of W27 x H6cm. It comes with a three-year warranty.

Comparison with Le Creuset

Both dishes are crafted from enamelled cast iron, a material favoured by professional chefs for its heat retention and even distribution. They feature tight-fitting lids that trap moisture and baste ingredients during slow cooking, along with smooth, pale-coloured interior enamel that prevents sticking and makes cleaning easier.

Aesthetically, the two are nearly identical. Lidl's offering has a pumpkin-inspired shape with sculpted grooves and a silver, stem-like handle, while its bold orange enamel echoes Le Creuset's signature 'Volcanic' shade. Both are compatible with all stovetop types and remain oven-safe to 260°C, though the Le Creuset model holds slightly more volume at 2.5 litres compared to Lidl's two litres.

Cooking and Care Tips

An enamelled cast iron casserole is versatile, suitable for braising, stewing, and high-heat baking. Recommended dishes include beef bourguignon, coq au vin, pulled pork, stew, and slow-cooked beef chilli.

To clean, allow the dish to cool completely before washing to avoid thermal shock that could crack the enamel. Soak in warm, soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes, use a gentle sponge or non-scratch nylon mesh pad, rinse well, and dry thoroughly with a tea towel to prevent rust on exposed cast iron edges.
