Lidl is set to launch a new range of products in stores on Sunday, October 11, including a £2.99 GRILLMEISTER Jet Flame Lighter that bears a striking resemblance to a B&Q tool priced at £17.50.
The supermarket chain, with roughly 1,000 locations nationwide, will introduce the lighter as part of its new lineup. Billed as "ideal" for those with a barbecue, fireplace, or who enjoy gathering round a campfire, the product comes with an 18ml refill gas canister.
Design and Availability
The all-black design is intended to fit seamlessly into a toolbox or garden shed, with two red controls providing a splash of colour. One button switches the device on, while the other toggle controls the flame strength.
The product carries an 18+ age restriction, so it won't be appropriate for all customers. It is exclusively available for in-store purchase, with no home delivery option. Stock levels can be checked at local branches on launch day using the online store locator.
Comparison with B&Q's Alternative
The Lidl lighter could be seen as a wallet-friendly substitute for the Mini Gas Blow Torch at B&Q, which costs £17.50 — almost six times the price. The two products look strikingly similar, save for the B&Q version's curved and sturdier base.
According to the B&Q website, the Mini Gas Blow Torch is described as: "Achieve perfect caramelisation and precision cooking with this compact mini blow torch. Refillable, windproof, and easy to handle, it's ideal for crème brulee, lemon meringue, roasted peppers, and other culinary creations. Adjustable flame and safety lock make it convenient and secure for everyday use."
Delivery Differences
Beyond price, a significant distinction involves delivery. B&Q offers complimentary home delivery on standard orders exceeding £100, otherwise £6, and free delivery on large or bulk orders above £500, otherwise £15. Deliveries require an adult signature and are deposited exclusively at the external ground floor of the property, with some international areas and offshore islands not included.
