Lidl beats Walkers and Aldi in cheese and onion crisp taste test
Lidl wins crisp taste test against Walkers and Aldi

Lidl's own-brand cheese and onion crisps have come out on top in a taste test against Walkers and Aldi, impressing with the strongest cheese flavour and a perfect crunch.

Brian Dillon, an audience writer, compared three bags of cheese and onion crisps: Aldi's Snackrite, Walkers, and Lidl's Snack Day. He wanted to see how the own-brand versions from the UK's cheapest supermarkets stacked up against the country's most famous crisp brand.

How the taste test worked

The comparison focused on price, taste, and texture. Multipacks of six were compared, as grab bags were not available in Aldi or Lidl.

Walkers, founded in the 1940s, has grown into the UK's most famous crisp brand with several classic and adventurous flavours. Cheese and onion is considered a classic flavour, making it a suitable benchmark for comparison.

The results

In third place came Aldi's Snackrite Cheese & Onion Crisps, priced at 85p. Brian found them quite frail and lacking flavour compared to the others. While acknowledging that 85p is not a bad purchase, he said he would not choose them again.

In second place was Walkers Cheese & Onion Multipack Crisps, priced at £2.35 at Tesco. Brian noted the difference in flavour and texture was immense compared to Aldi's. He described the texture as firm yet easy to crunch, with a nicely balanced flavour, and said there is a reason these crisps are so popular.

The winner

The winner was Lidl's Snack Day Cheese and Onion Crisps, also priced at 85p. Brian said it was obvious straight away, as they had the strongest cheese flavour without being overpowering. The texture was a perfect crunch, and the thinness made the flavour the star of the show. He called them practically a steal at 85p.
