Supermarket chain Lidl is pressing ahead with the construction of three new large stores in the North East, one of which will transform a well-known bus depot in the region.
The new outlets are planned for Shieldfield, on the outskirts of Newcastle city centre; Green Lane in Linthorpe; and Chester Road in Stanley, County Durham, where Lidl has taken over the former Go North East bus depot that has stood empty since 2019.
Stanley store takes shape
Fit-out works are already underway in Stanley, where the new store will feature a 1,334m² sales area. Designed to improve local shopping choice for residents, the store will offer the discounter's value and low prices.
The Stanley development is one of three projects that Lidl says will breathe new life into long-vacant brownfield sites.
Regional investment and jobs
David Murphy, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, said: "For over three decades, we’ve been proud to serve communities across the North East, and demand for our high-quality, affordable products continues to grow. Each of these developments breathes new life into long-vacant brownfield sites, bringing jobs, sustainable building features, and unbeatable value closer to home. We look forward to keeping everyone updated as construction progresses."
The new stores are expected to bring employment and sustainable building features to their respective areas, with Lidl saying it will provide updates as work continues.
