Construction work is now underway on a new Lidl supermarket on Stoddart Street in Shieldfield, Newcastle, placing the discount retailer close to the city's large student community.
The German retail giant first announced plans in May 2025 to build new stores in Shieldfield and on Lobley Hill Road in Bensham, with the openings expected to create around 80 new jobs.
Store features and facilities
Both stores will include the retailer's award-winning bakery, the much-loved Middle of Lidl aisle, and baby-changing facilities. At the time of the announcement, it was suggested the stores would open at the start of this year, but that timeline was not met. Building work is now progressing at the Shieldfield site.
Retailer's response
Speaking about the new stores last year, David Murphy, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, said: "For over 20 years we've been offering high quality and affordable products to communities in Newcastle and Gateshead, with demand only continuing to grow."
