Fashion shoppers looking to update their wardrobe for autumn may be impressed by a new jumper coming to Lidl stores this weekend. The supermarket is releasing several new clothing items on Sunday, October 4, with one particular item featuring aesthetics similar to those of high-end brands, but at a fraction of the price.
Similarities to High-End Brands
The supermarket's new Esmara Ladies' Light Beige Jumper has similarities to the luxury retailer Hobbs' £69 Nell Chunky Cable Jumper. It could also be compared to Barbour's Hampton Knit Sweater, which is available at Frasers for £58.
Lidl's £7.99 Light Beige Jumper is described as having a "stylish cable knit design". It is made with Lycra for a "superior fit". Sizes range from small to large. The material is 67% acrylic, 30% polyester and 3% elastane.
Visual Comparisons
Visually, Lidl's jumper and Hobbs' £69 Nell Chunky Cable Jumper are both suitable for autumn weather. They feature a round neckline, a classic cable-knit pattern across the front, and come in a soft material in a versatile neutral colour; Lidl opts for a warm light beige, and Hobbs' version has a traditional ivory hue.
A description of the £69 Hobbs' jumper reads: "Refresh your knitwear repertoire with the Nell jumper. Spun in wear-everywhere ivory with a textural cable knit, it pairs as effortlessly with tailored trousers as it does weekend denim."
Material Differences
However, a closer look at the specifications reveals some differences. The Hobbs jumper is crafted for longevity and warmth, using a natural-fibre blend of wool, cotton, and alpaca. It features a relaxed, oversized silhouette with dropped shoulders and a casual round neckline.
The budget-friendly Esmara alternative relies on a synthetic blend of acrylic, polyester, and elastane. While it isn't made with wool, the addition of elastane provides extra stretch, and the synthetic fibres offer an easy-care, machine-washable finish.
At first glance, the Lidl Esmara jumper could also be easily mistaken for the Barbour Hampton knit. Both feature a cable-knit pattern and come in a soft, versatile off-white tone.
Weight and Feel
However, the biggest difference between the two is how they will actually feel when you wear them. The premium Barbour Hampton Sweater is made from 100% natural cotton. This makes it lightweight, highly breathable, and ideal for mild spring or autumn days.
In contrast, the budget-friendly Lidl jumper is made from a chunky synthetic blend of acrylic and polyester. It is much heavier and fluffier, designed strictly to keep you warm in freezing winter weather.
In the product description of the Barbour jumper, Frasers says: "The ideal layer for the cooler days, this Cotton jumper comes in a cable-knit design and features a rounded neckline, ribbed cuffs and open side seams for a casual look, finished with a subtle metal logo bar to the back neck."
It is up to shoppers to decide which design and brand they prefer. However, for those who like the look of the Hobbs and Barbour jumper but want to stick to a budget, the Lidl option could be a wallet-friendly alternative.
