The most popular used car in the UK has been revealed, and it is not a MINI, Vauxhall, or Ford. Analysis of Britain's motorists' buying habits by Carwow has named the Kia Sportage as the top choice, a result that may surprise some.
Used Car Market Thrives Amid Cost of Living Crisis
While new cars often dominate headlines, they remain financially out of reach for many buyers. Consequently, the used car market continues to be the preferred option for a significant number of motorists. With the cost of living crisis persisting, an increasing number of drivers are turning to second-hand vehicles for their next reliable car. It is therefore crucial that buyers receive proper guidance when selecting a car.
Carwow Data Reveals Top Used Cars
A key indicator of a car's value is how many people are actively seeking to buy it. Carwow has compiled a list of the most sought-after used cars based on its own data. Topping the list is the Kia Sportage, a model currently competing with the Ford Puma, Nissan Qashqai, and Jaecoo 7 for the title of the UK's most popular new car.
Commenting on the Sportage's top ranking, Carwow said: "Topping our list of enquiries for used cars in May is the Kia Sportage. This practical SUV has a premium-feeling cabin as well as roomy back seats and a boot of up to 591 litres. But while we think it's a very well-equipped family car, it's pretty bland to drive and is not as efficient as alternatives."
Second and Third Place Contenders
Hot on the Sportage's heels in second place was the BMW 3 Series, lauded as "a brilliant all-rounder and one of the best in its class." However, it drew criticism for its lack of physical controls for the air-conditioning and reduced boot space in the plug-in hybrid version.
Coming in third place was the Jaecoo 7, nicknamed the 'Temu Range Rover' by some. It was commended for its "well-made interior, head-turning styling" and outstanding value for money. However, Carwow was quick to point out: "That said, we find that this Jaecoo isn't very good to drive, and it's not as practical as its boxy styling would have you believe."
Expert Review of the Kia Sportage
A review of the Kia Sportage for the Daily Express was impressed by what was found. The reviewer stated: "I enjoyed my time with the Kia. It was well sprung, and its width helped give it stability on motorways and B-roads. Overall, I think the Kia Sportage is a better car than the Ford Puma. Yes, it is bigger and therefore likely less able to deal with some of the UK's tightest spots. It does, because of that, mean that wider loads will more easily fit in it. Furthermore, I feel the interior is easier to use, with fewer functions dealt with via the touchscreen and that it drives better. Whether it ultimately succeeds in dethroning the Ford will be fascinating to see as the year rolls on."
