A hidden gem near London
Located just outside the M25 and less than an hour's train ride from Elephant & Castle in south London, Shoreham is a peaceful escape from city life. The village is so small you might miss it if you blink.
The Mount Vineyard produces its own white, rose, and red sparkling wines. The sparkling red was a surprise highlight, described as punchy with berries without being overpowering. The sparkling rose was delicate, while the sparkling white was crisp with a hint of sweetness.
Dining at The Samuel Palmer
The Samuel Palmer, a 15th-century building and sister pub to the vineyard, holds two AA Rosettes since 2023. Its menu changes seasonally, featuring local produce. Dishes include line-caught seabass with English peas, smoked roe, and beurre blanc; Cornish fish croquettes with tandoori mayo; and 12-hour braised lamb belly flatbread.
The pub offers a cosy restaurant, a garden, and a selection of local beers on tap. It provides a space for every mood, with low beams and exposed wood adding to its traditional charm.
