Home Bargains has confirmed that all of its more than 600 UK stores will close for three days over the festive period. The discount retailer, founded in Liverpool in 1976, said on Tuesday that its stores will shut on Christmas Day (December 25), Boxing Day (December 26) and New Year's Day (January 1).
Staff recognised for hard work
Home Bargains, which employs around 28,000 staff, has not made further comment at this stage. However, when the company announced the same news in 2025, a spokesperson said: "Our colleagues work incredibly hard throughout the year, and we want to recognise that commitment. As a family-run business, we understand the importance of spending time with family and friends, particularly over the holidays."
"We're proud to give our teams additional time off to enjoy the festive season."
Retailer's growth and expansion
Headquartered in Liverpool, TJ Morris Ltd, trading as Home Bargains, is one of the UK's fastest-growing discount retailers and the country's biggest independent grocer. Tom Morris opened the first Home Bargains store in Liverpool in 1976, originally trading as Home and Bargain, and the brand has since grown into a nationwide retail giant.
Statistics released earlier this year revealed that Home Bargains' revenue rose by 7.9% to £4.5bn in its most recent full financial year, driven by estate expansions, relocations and in-store growth. Fifteen new stores opened in the year to June 30, 2025, bringing the total number of stores to 632.
