Harvey & Co Bakery Closes After Four Years Due to Rising Costs

A popular bakery brand has announced its permanent closure, leaving regular customers heartbroken. Harvey & Co Bakery, located in Rendlesham near Woodbridge, Suffolk, has shut its doors after four and a half years of operation. The business, which launched as a bakery and café in 2021, cited rising costs as the primary reason for its closure.

Owner Cites Financial Challenges

Owner Harvey Allen explained that the decision was driven by financial difficulties, including increasing costs of labour, supplies, and particularly electricity. The bakery's sister café, Café Vida at Vida Haus Yoga Studio in Pettistree, which opened in early 2024, will continue to operate.

Customer Reactions

Customers expressed their sadness on social media. One regular said: “Yes, big shame. It was the source of my daily morning coffee. No more unless someone pops up to take it over.” Another commented: “The notice on the door says ‘permanently closed’ obviously an issue sadly going on here.”

The business had received positive reviews, with one customer noting: “Lovely food and lovely staff. Nice little shop where they make all the products right next to you in the bakery. Bread is top quality.”

Sister Café Remains Open

Mr. Allen encouraged customers to visit Café Vida: “We encourage our customers to visit us there, where we will continue to serve our community. We want to express our deepest gratitude to all of our lovely customers who have supported us throughout these years. Your loyalty and kindness made Harvey & Co a special place. We also want to thank our hardworking and talented staff, whose dedication made everything possible.”

Broader Economic Context

The closure reflects a wider trend of UK businesses struggling with rising operational costs. Many independent businesses have been forced to close or reduce staff due to the current economic climate. The news comes amid ongoing financial pressures affecting small enterprises across the country.
