The George Hotel, a historic pub in Crosby, will reopen on Friday, August 21 after a major summer transformation. The venue has been closed since May and will now be led by independent operators for the first time in decades.
From Glass Collector to Pub Owner
Jon Hewitt, who acquired the premises alongside the team behind Murphy's Tavern in Crosby Village, described the journey as "unbelievable." He told the ECHO: "I got my first ever job here when I was 15 in 1997. To now call it my own is a little bit surreal. It's unbelievable. To be the first independent owner is a great honour."
Hewitt added: "It was run by Whitbread at the time. I used to love working here and I'm really excited that it's going to be back open. It's not going to be a big empty building in Crosby Village."
New Look and Offerings
The reopening represents a significant private investment in the revitalisation of the area's nighttime and hospitality economy. The refurbishment includes restoring oak wood panelling, exposing fireplaces, restoring Victorian toilets, upgrading bar facilities, enhancing seating areas, and installing a modernised kitchen to support a full daily food service.
Hewitt said: "We've got big plans for it. We're going to take it in a different direction. We're going to be offering some restaurant quality food and I hope you can all join us soon for a drink." He added: "I want every visit to be an experience and more than just a pub. We're going to offer great restaurant quality food and specialities, focusing on customer service so everyone feels welcome."
History and Community Impact
Hewitt spent three months researching the history of The George, which dates back to the 19th century. He said: "To come full circle and now be part of the team bringing the venue back to life is fantastic." The pub will create 20 new jobs and serve traditional, good old-fashioned pub food daily. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening on Friday, August 21.
