The Auld Cathkin, a family-run pub in Rutherglen, Glasgow, has announced it will permanently close on Wednesday, September 2. The venue, located on Kilbride Road, shared the news in a Facebook post on August 25.
The pub is known for hosting local events, games nights, live performances, and quiz nights. It also serves as a function hall for birthdays, weddings, and private events. The team said they were "absolutely heartbroken" about the closure, though the reason has not been confirmed.
Closure announcement and customer reaction
In the statement, the pub said: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we have to let you all know that The Auld Cathkin will be closing its doors on Wednesday 2nd September. We are absolutely heartbroken that this is happening." The post thanked customers for their support, adding: "The love and support you have shown us has meant more to our family than we could ever put into words."
All upcoming events scheduled after September 2 have been cancelled. Affected customers will be contacted directly by the venue. The announcement also thanked staff, saying: "The biggest thank you of all goes to our amazing staff. We genuinely could not have done any of this without you."

The Facebook post prompted a wave of support from customers. One wrote: "Sorry to hear this - you done amazing with the fundraising night we had last month, hall was beautiful x wishing you all the best for your next chapter x." Another added: "This has been a sore one. Av had two absolute brilliant gigs in the Auld Cathkin and the staff / punters couldn’t have been a nice bunch. Best of luck in your next venture guys."
Other comments included "Can't believe this" and "No Feckin way ..Whyyyyy." The pub's final message read: "We wish things could have been different, but for now we simply want to say…Thank you. For everything."
