Ghost, a bar and club in Whitley Bay that opened in June with the promise of 'good times and unforgettable nights,' has closed just months after its official launch. Signs for a new Mediterranean restaurant, Greek on the Beach, have already appeared outside the building on South Parade.
Short-lived run at South Parade
Ghost took over the premises previously occupied for years by the much-loved night spot the Hairy Lemon. It opened its doors in June with the bold declaration that it would be 'the home of unforgettable nights in Whitley Bay' and have an atmosphere that was 'unmatched,' as locals looked forward to having a new place to party.
Open six days a week and until 2.30am on Fridays and Saturdays, Ghost billed itself as a great place to catch up with friends or have a full night out, with a number of tempting drink offers running every day. However, after the last post on the Ghost Facebook page went out on August 1, it has now been revealed that Ghost has shut and will become Greek on the Beach.
New restaurant and wider nightlife changes
The new restaurant is the latest venture from the owners of the former Petros Restaurant in Winlaton Mill. There was another blow for Whitley Bay's nightlife last month when it was revealed that Ghost's neighbour, Havana, was shutting down, having been a favourite of many people since the 00s.
The nightlife scene in Whitley Bay and wider North Tyneside has changed a lot over the years. What used to be a mecca for Bank Holiday revellers, with many different places to call into on a pub crawl up at the coast, is very different these days; while Whitley still has a whole host of great food and drink businesses, the 'party vibes' of old look to have evaporated.
