GAME Retailer Shuts All Standalone Stores, Website and Concessions Continue
GAME Closes All Physical Stores, Website Remains Open

Major UK Video Game Retailer GAME to Close All Physical Stores

In a significant development for the British high street, the prominent video game retailer GAME has officially confirmed that all three of its remaining standalone physical stores will permanently close their doors from April 2026. This decision marks the end of an era for the brand's brick-and-mortar presence, though the company's digital operations and extensive concession network will continue to serve customers.

Administration Filing and Strategic Downsizing

The announcement follows GAME's earlier filing of a notice of intention to appoint administrators earlier this year, signaling financial challenges within the traditional retail sector. The retailer has been systematically downsizing for several years, closing stores as leases expired, and last year it shut down its corporate headquarters in Basingstoke as part of this restructuring effort.

Despite the store closures, GAME will maintain its commercial activities through two key channels. The GAME website will continue trading as usual, providing online sales and support. Additionally, the retailer will preserve its physical footprint through over 200 concession stands located within Sports Direct and House of Fraser stores across the United Kingdom.

Commitment to Physical Gaming Products

In a 2023 interview with GamesIndustry.biz, GAME's Managing Director, Nick Arran, strongly refuted suggestions that the company was shifting away from its core gaming business to focus on alternative products like toys. He emphasized, "Gaming is our core business, and we will be the last man standing selling physical video games."

Arran elaborated on the retailer's market position, stating, "We see our place in the market as proving that there is a place for physical, whether that be the collector's editions, which we see as the vinyl of video games, or the gifter who doesn't want to wrap up a download code for Christmas. But we need to be realistic. We have a business to run, and the expectation is that this will decline. So we need to fill that gap."

Customer Information and Gift Card Policies

On its official website, GAME has clarified important details for customers regarding gift cards and eVouchers. The company states that these payment methods are valid for two years after their purchase date, with any remaining balance being cancelled upon expiration. It is also specified that gift cards and eVouchers cannot be used by customers located outside of the United Kingdom.

Broader Context of Retail and Travel Industry Challenges

This development occurs against a backdrop of similar difficulties in other sectors. Notably, Icelandic airline PLAY, headquartered in Reykjavík, confirmed it had entered administration and ceased all operations on September 29 of the previous year. A statement on the carrier's website at the time informed passengers, "Dear passenger, Fly PLAY hf. has ceased operations, and all flights have been cancelled."

According to reports from local media outlet RUV, PLAY's closure left approximately 400 employees facing redundancy, with the company reportedly "trying to pay staff their wages." It remains unclear whether all affected employees have received their full payments. PLAY was established in July 2019 and began operations from its base at Keflavík International Airport in Reykjavik in June 2021, initially serving six European destinations including Alicante, Tenerife, London, Paris, Copenhagen, and Berlin.

The closure of GAME's standalone stores represents a significant shift in the UK retail landscape, reflecting broader trends toward digital commerce and concession-based models, while highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by traditional physical retailers in adapting to evolving consumer behaviors and market conditions.
