Frome, a historic market town in Somerset located 13 miles south of Bath, has repeatedly earned national recognition for its independent high streets and shopping streets. The town, which dates back to the seventh century, is home to over 80 independent shops, according to ShopFrome, a community-owned online digital marketplace designed to support independent businesses, local makers, and shops in Frome.
Recognition and Awards
Catherine Hill, one of Frome's main shopping streets, has previously been named in the UK's top 10 favourite and most beautiful shopping streets by Homes & Antiques magazine. Catherine Hill and Cheap Street were later named among the best independent high streets in the UK as part of Holly & Co's campaign Shop Independent.
In 2015, Frome won the Great Town Award from the Academy of Urbanism, with judges highlighting its independent retail sector and lively town-centre streets. It was also crowned the best place to live in Somerset and Bristol by Muddy Stillettos last year.
New Independent Shops
Frome has recently welcomed several new independent shops. At the end of July, the town welcomed Western Willow on Catherine Hill, described as a shop selling female clothing inspired by Western style with coastal roots. Earlier this year, community DIY shop Fromebase also opened its doors, in addition to Cafe Leat, which opened in January at 16 Cheap Street. Named after the historic waterway running through the middle of the street, Cafe Leat is a café serving coffee, homemade bakes and freshly-made food available to eat in or takeaway.
Historic Streets and Markets
Cheap Street has retained its historic medieval character, with a leat running down the middle, carrying water from the stream beneath St John's Church. The town hosts regular markets every Wednesday and Saturday. There is also the Frome Farmers' Market, which takes place on the second Saturday of every month from February to December and has been running since 1998.
The Frome Independent market takes place on the first Sunday of the month from March to December and strives to be "more than a market", with live music, DJs, street performance, workshops and activities for both children and adults. According to its website, The Frome Independent attracts over 80,000 visitors each year.
Visitor Praise
In April, YouTuber Retire and Travel the World named Frome "one of England's best-preserved medieval towns", praising its winding lanes, historic architecture and community feel. She added: "Frome is known for its winding streets, historic buildings and strong sense of community. Unlike many English towns, much of Frome's medieval layout has survived, giving visitors a real sense of what the town would have looked like centuries ago."
One TripAdvisor user said Catherine Hill was a "great place to visit" and called it "one of the best streets for independent shops." Another added: "Absolutely fabulous shops, all unique and full of interesting things to buy. Shop owners were all so friendly and knowledgeable and the street is just stunning!"
