Free Domino's Pizza on Lumo Trains This Bank Holiday Weekend
Free Domino's Pizza on Lumo Trains This Bank Holiday

Train passengers can get free Domino's pizza delivered directly to their seats this Bank Holiday weekend in what is claimed to be a UK first. Trainline has partnered with Domino's to offer the service on selected Lumo trains between London Euston and Stirling in both directions from Saturday August 29 to Monday August 31.

Service targets mid-journey hunger

The onboard delivery service aims to tackle travel 'hanger', with 40% of passengers feeling hungry within the first hour of a journey, reaching its peak between two and three hours into a long trip. Trainline ambassadors will deliver freshly made pizzas to passengers in their seats as trains pull into Preston station, roughly halfway between Stirling and London.

Passengers can pre-order a pizza ahead of their trip, provided they are aboard the train as it passes through Preston. Reservations are available now on a first-come, first-served basis, with orders able to be placed up until midnight the evening before each trip.

Partners comment on the launch

Natalie Marques at Trainline said: "At Trainline we want every journey to feel on passengers' terms, including looking forward to what they're going to eat onboard. Food shapes how people enjoy travel, so we're making this busy festival weekend and bank holiday even better by ensuring passengers can satisfy their pizza cravings enroute. When travelling with family and friends, no transport makes sharing a pizza easier than a train."

Ryan Kenton at Domino's said: "Over the years we've heard stories of train travellers trying to time a cheeky pizza delivery with a station platform visit. Domino's is known for super-speedy delivery, so we're delighted to partner with Trainline to make these Train Thru dreams come true. Now, passengers can get a piping hot pizza pick-me-up delivered right to their seats, just as the mid-journey hunger pangs start to bite."

Passenger demand for onboard food

The launch follows research showing 57% of train passengers are craving greater food choices while travelling. Nearly two-thirds (63%) said they would welcome having a hot, fresh takeaway brought straight to their seat during their trip, with pizza leading the rankings of train takeaway preferences.

Among those surveyed, over a third (35%) confessed they have tried to order a takeaway to their seat, yet only a fifth (20%) achieved a successful collection. Over half (53%) of passengers admit they miscalculate their hunger on lengthy trips, and over a third (36%) experience feelings of being 'hangry' and irritable.

Passengers can select from Domino's Original Cheese and Tomato, Pepperoni Passion, Vegi Supreme and Plant-Based Margheri-tastic. Pizzas will be handed over when the train pulls into Preston. Customers are not required to travel the entire route, but must have Preston as a stop on their journey to collect their pizza.
