Farmfoods new Leigh store beats Aldi and Lidl on price

A visit to the newly opened Farmfoods store in Leigh, Wigan, found a range of products priced below those charged by discount rivals Aldi and Lidl, including strawberries at 99p for a 400g punnet compared with £2.15 at Aldi.

The store relocated from Spinning Gate Shopping Centre to Leigh Road and is larger and more modern than a typical Farmfoods, the chain having opened more than 20 new sites across the UK in the last 18 months.

Cheaper than the discounters

A pack of four Pink Lady apples cost £1.39, while six cost £2.85 at Aldi, and an 800g Kingsmill 50/50 loaf was 99p compared with £1.05. Heinz Ketchup was 99p for a 295g glass bottle, or the same price for a 400ml plastic bottle of the lower salt and sugar version.

Butter from Graham's The Family Dairy was 99p for a 250g block, while most supermarkets have dropped their price to £1.85. Farmfoods' own brand was also cheaper at 99p for 227g.

Bulk buys and other bargains

Other offers included three for £10 on frozen products such as Holland's pies, three 2-litre bottles of milk for £3.50, 10kg bags of Badshah Basmati Rice for £11.99, 24 cans of Dr Pepper for £11.25, 300 Tetley tea bags for £4.99, 5kg bags of red onions for £1.99 and 24 tins of Heinz beans for £19.99.

A giant 32-pack of Birds Eye Omega Fish Fingers was £3.99, compared with £8.50 in Morrisons, while a 150g pack of bacon cost 69p, 15 eggs £1.99, a 1kg bag of Conchiglie pasta shells 99p, a box of 10 Tunnock's tea cakes £1.99 and a pack of six Proper Corn sea salted popcorn 49p.

Household products and more openings

Non-food items included 12kg bags of Wagg dog food at £9.99, or two for £18, and 12 tins of Butcher's at £9.99. Colgate Triple Action toothpaste was 89p for a 75ml tube, or two for £1.50, and Imperial Leather Body Wash was 89p for a 250ml bottle.

Farmfoods now has more than 340 shops throughout Scotland, England and Wales, with another recent opening at Birchwood Shopping Centre in Warrington. The company said the new Leigh store offers its full range of branded and own-brand products and benefits from a large free customer car park.

The store is open Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm, Saturday 8am to 8pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm. More new openings are planned between now and the end of the year and into 2027.
