Fans fume at 'scandalous' drink prices at England warm-up

England's 1-0 victory over New Zealand on Saturday may not be remembered for long, but the exorbitant drink prices at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, have caused a stir among fans. Harry Kane scored the only goal as the Three Lions prepared for the World Cup, with Thomas Tuchel making wholesale changes at half-time and handing a debut to Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha.

Drink prices spark outrage

Social media erupted with criticism after photos emerged showing the cost of refreshments at the stadium. Daily Mail journalist Mike Keegan shared an image of a bar charging $18 (£13.45) for a premium beer and $16.75 (£12.50) for a domestic beer. An 'ultra premium double cocktail' was priced at $26.50 (£19.80).

PA's Simon Peach posted a picture from another bar where the cheapest item was a bottle of water for $7.50 (£5.60). Fans labelled the prices 'scandalous' and 'insane', with some noting that tips would be expected on top.

Attendance and conditions

The game drew an attendance of 25,889 in a stadium that can hold up to 75,000. The pitch also drew criticism, with Tuchel describing it as 'very uneven' and difficult for quick ball movement.

FIFA water bottle policy

Earlier this week, reports claimed FIFA had banned fans from bringing water into World Cup matches. However, it was clarified that disposable plastic bottles are allowed, while hard-sided reusable containers are prohibited for security reasons.

World Cup 2026 chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi stated: 'Each spectator can bring one 20 ounce (560ml) soft, plastic disposable factory-sealed water bottle into the stadium.'

Looking ahead

England face Costa Rica in another friendly on Wednesday before starting their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17.
