A simple fabric softener solution can keep floors dust-free for longer in autumn, reducing the need for frequent vacuuming. As temperatures drop and households switch on their heating, dust tends to accumulate more quickly on floors.
Why floors get dustier in autumn
Radiators circulate warm air through a room, and when turned on for the first time this year, any accumulated dust inside is released and eventually settles on surfaces below. The added warmth can also dry out indoor air, leading to rapid static electricity build-up on surfaces, which attracts airborne dust particles to cling to flooring.
Marissa, founder of The Frugal Navy Wife, has revealed a method to maintain spotless floors: wipe them with a touch of fabric softener. Marissa explained: "Grab a microfiber towel, dip it in a fabric softener, and use it to wipe down your floorboard to remove dirt and dust that can easily accumulate."
How fabric softener works
Fabric softener contains conditioning agents formulated to neutralise static charge, stopping clothes from becoming tangled in the washing machine. Static electricity requires a dry atmosphere to accumulate, which explains why floors are typically dustier during the colder months.
Fabric softener can neutralise static charge on floors while leaving a delicate protective layer that prevents dust, fibres and debris from clinging to surfaces. This trick helps maintain cleaner floors for extended periods, reducing how frequently you need to vacuum.
A word of caution though – excessive fabric softener will leave floors slippery or even tacky, so avoid pouring it directly onto surfaces. Just a few drops are sufficient to combat static, making it far better to dilute the product in warm water before using it as a cleaning solution.
How to clean a floor with fabric softener
You will need: 500ml of warm water, one or two teaspoons of fabric softener, microfiber cloths or a mop, and an empty spray bottle.
Start by pouring the warm water into an empty spray bottle. Avoid using boiling water straight from the kettle, as this can cause damage to laminate, vinyl or wooden flooring. Add the fabric softener, secure the lid and give the bottle a gentle shake to combine the solution. Resist the temptation to spray directly onto the floor, as this will create a slippery surface and excessive moisture can harm your flooring.
Instead, mist the solution onto a cloth or mop head until slightly damp. Don't saturate your cleaning materials – you need just enough moisture to capture the dust effectively. Clean or mop your floor as you normally would, then allow it to air dry naturally. Your floor should now be gleaming and remain cleaner for considerably longer this autumn.
