Denby, the UK homeware brand founded in 1809, has cut prices to as low as £2 as it prepares to close all of its remaining stores after more than 200 years in business. The Derbyshire-based company, known for its handcrafted pottery products "shaped by generations of craftsmen", collapsed into administration earlier this year.
Final week of trading
The final stores are set to close this week, including the flagship Denby Pottery Village. The major store will open from 9am to 5pm every day this week and will officially stop trading at 4pm on Sunday, August 30.
All remaining locations, including Ashford, Portsmouth, Braintree, York, Dalton Park, Castleford and Cheshire Oak, will also cease trading. Sale prices for the pottery start from £2 per item, with bundles available from just £6.
Administration and job losses
A campaign to encourage more purchases was launched, but the administrators had difficulty finding a buyer. As a result, production was paused. A notice on the website reads: "It is with great sadness that, following Denby entering administration, our website is no longer accepting online orders.
"All orders that have already been placed will still be fulfilled by the end of August. Thank you for your patience at this incredibly busy time."
It is expected that 600 jobs will be lost when all the shops close.
Brand to continue under new ownership
Tony Wright, joint administrator of the Denby group of companies and partner at FRP, said it was a "sad moment to see the Pottery Village close after so many years" and that he hoped as many people would come to give the historic brand the "send-off it deserves".
He added: "While the stores are closing, the Denby brand itself will continue under new ownership, ensuring its legacy lives on."
