A crumpet taste test comparing packs from Tesco, Aldi, M&S and Warburtons found the Warburtons Original Crumpets the winner, scoring 10/10, with the 75p pack beating more expensive rivals.
Holly Kintuka, an audience writer, tested the four crumpet options for texture, flavour and how well they held up to a generous spread of butter. The Tesco and Aldi packs were price-matched at 45p, while M&S cost £1.60 and Warburtons 90p (75p with a Tesco Clubcard).
Tesco and Aldi disappoint
Tesco's six crumpets scored 3/10. Kintuka found them overly thick, dry despite a decent amount of butter, and chewy, noting the packet's thickness meant it probably needed more butter to soak up. She said she would not purchase them again despite the low price.
Aldi's Village Bakery six crumpets scored 4/10. They were described as average, thick and taking slightly longer to chew, though soft. Kintuka said they were not worth buying just because they are cheap, and she did not like them enough to go out of her way to pick up a pack.
M&S and Warburtons impress
Marks and Spencer's six ultimate crumpets scored 7.5/10. Kintuka was taken aback by the £1.60 price but found them delicious, soft with a crisp bottom, not as chewy as the Tesco or Aldi options, and they soaked up butter well. She rated the taste 10/10 but felt £1.60 for a packet was a bit much.
Warburtons Original Crumpets were the clear winner. They were not overly thick, had the perfect bready texture, were soft, soaked up butter well and tasted delicious, all for under £1. Kintuka noted the company's 150 years of experience in the baking industry as no surprise it makes the perfect crumpets.
