Co-op is rolling out a new 'flexi checkout' system across 150 of its stores by April, following successful trials. The multipurpose tills can be operated by cashiers or switched to self-service mode, ensuring all tills remain open at all times.
The digital screens on the checkouts display price savings, deals, and promotions for customers. When used as staffed tills, they allow colleagues to provide traditional service while also greeting and assisting more shoppers.
David Tyas, Co-op’s Head of Operations Support Centre and Innovation, said: 'We know that many customers enjoy engaging with our friendly colleagues in store, while for others a quick transaction is key. Our latest checkout technology replaces existing tills with the added flexibility to do both.'
The move is part of Co-op's wider investment in its physical store estate, including plans to open 18 new and transformed stores across the UK, such as in Westgate, Skelmersdale, Lancashire.
