The Co-op has appointed former Holland & Barrett international chief executive Alex Dower as managing director of its retail business.
Dower joins the Co-op with more than 20 years of retail experience, including roles at Tesco, Harrods, Woolworths, Mars and PepsiCo. In his new role, he will be responsible for one of the UK's biggest convenience groups, which operates more than 2,300 stores and has a turnover of £7.25bn.
Track record in retail
In his most recent position at Holland & Barrett, Dower was credited with helping to turn around several international markets, improving own-brand sales and increasing sales and profit. At Woolworths Australia, he developed the retailer's fresh food range, again increasing growth.
Kate Allum, Co-op's interim chief executive, said: “His personal values and leadership approach are fully aligned with our Co-op and I’m excited about the impact he will have.”
New leadership
Dower said: “I’m looking forward to working with our fantastic colleagues to make it even more relevant to members and customers every day. Co-op’s purpose and values are what set it apart.”
Co-op's food business was previously led by Matt Hood, who was most recently group managing director. His departure was announced in June.
