The Angel in Knutsford has expanded its accommodation from eight to 12 bedrooms following a £350,000 makeover. The historic pub, located a couple of miles from Tatton Park, is owned by Manchester-based Joseph Holt brewery.
New Rooms and Refurbishment
The new rooms join existing bedrooms, all featuring plush, rustic styling and décor that complement the rural setting of this historic market town. Each room is named after parts of the brewing process, such as Brewhouse, Mash Ton, and Hops & Barley.
Mark Norbury, director of pubs with Joseph Holt, said: "With visitors increasingly seeking the warm and welcoming atmosphere of traditional pub accommodation, the refurbishment of The Angel couldn’t have come at a better time." He added: "We are incredibly proud of our historic, beautifully furnished pub and delighted that the growing number of visitors flocking to Cheshire have somewhere so charming and comfortable to stay."
Visitor Trends and Local Appeal
The investment comes as research reveals that 53% of people believe pubs offer more traditional and historic charm than other types of accommodation. The brewery also reports that visitor numbers to Cheshire continue to boom, with the county attracting increasing numbers of people looking to explore its historic towns, countryside, and attractions.
A late 18th-century coaching inn and Grade II listed building, The Angel sits in the heart of Knutsford, well placed for those wanting to visit the town's film-set worthy main streets, with their abundance of 17th and 18th-century houses, shops, and Georgian buildings.
Dining and Local Attractions
The Angel Hotel has also enjoyed a general refresh as part of the recent facelift. The dining areas offer a varied and evolving menu, from classic pies and grills to small plates, as well as options for vegans and vegetarians. After lunch or dinner, guests can relax in the dark wood and tiled bars, which serve Joseph Holt's beers as well as wines, spirits, and a range of cocktails.
As visitor numbers rise to this area of Cheshire, The Angel is also a great location to visit other attractions, including Tatton Park, a historic estate a five-minute drive north of Knutsford, and just a few minutes' walk away from its pedestrian entrance. The pub is also well known among literary enthusiasts, as it features as one of the settings in Elizabeth Gaskell’s 1853 novel Cranford, which is based on her hometown. It was in the Angel where character Lord Mauleverer stayed when Captain Brown’s house proved to be too humble.
