Charity Shop Manager Reveals Best Day to Find New Stock and Bargains
Charity Shop Manager Reveals Best Day for Bargains

A charity shop manager has revealed the key insider tip for finding the best bargains: ask your local store which day they rotate their stock. Speaking to Sky News, Amy Lorenz, manager of the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance charity shop, explained that her store takes off items that have been on the shop floor for three weeks on Friday evenings and puts out new stock on Saturday mornings. She advised visiting after lunch on Saturday to see the freshest items. However, she noted that different shops have different rotation days, so customers should enquire at their local store and plan accordingly.

Best Time of Year for Charity Shop Treasures

Lorenz highlighted that the biggest influx of donations occurs during the post-Christmas and spring clear-out seasons, when people declutter their homes. This means a wider variety and higher quality of items become available. Shoppers looking for designer brands, pre-loved handbags, or unique homeware are more likely to find gems during these periods.

Patience and Exploration Pay Off

The manager emphasized that thrifting requires patience. “If you are hunting for a particular item, you need to accept that thrifting is a marathon, not a sprint. Keep looking and one day the perfect item will be there waiting for you,” she told Sky News. She also advised checking every section of the shop, including areas that may not match your size, taste, or gender, as stock constantly changes and items can be misplaced by customers.

What to Donate and What to Avoid

Lorenz encouraged donors to think, “Would I be happy giving this item to a friend?” before dropping off goods. Charity shops accept a huge range of items for all styles and sizes, from young and fashionable dressers to business professionals and older donors. However, they draw the line at unclean items or those that have not been properly cared for. She recalled receiving a pair of dirty underwear, which reinforced the need for donors to be considerate.

Dispelling Myths About Charity Shops

Lorenz noted that many people assume charity shops only sell old-fashioned items, but in reality, they offer an eclectic mix. Donations come from diverse sources, ensuring a wide variety of stock. With sustainability and bargain-hunting on the rise, charity shops remain a treasure trove for those willing to put in the effort.
