New computer-generated images (CGIs) show how a proposed Lidl store could look in Pendleton if it is given the green light. The images were submitted as part of a planning application to Salford council for a new store on the site of the former Buzz Bingo hall on Hankinson Way.
Earlier this month, the supermarket applied for permission to bulldoze the old building. Bosses have now added a submission to erect a new building in its place.
Store features and design
The new discount shop will include a ‘high-quality landscaping plan’ and the provision of 105 car parking spaces, along with cycle storage and a delivery bay. The 2,145 square metres of floor space will include a sales area, warehouse delivery area, freezer room, bakery, a manager’s office, staff welfare facilities, and a customer toilet.
The design will be ‘modern’ and functional, with a statement saying: “The layout proposed aims to ensure that the design contributes positively to the street scene with the glazed wall fronting Belvedere Road, providing openness and vibrancy as well as encouraging natural surveillance from increased activity around the store entrance and individuals using the car park.”
Previous housing plans scrapped
The land was originally supposed to be turned into 270 affordable flats by Zetland Capital and an offshoot of Donard Affordable Homes. The development for three apartment blocks, including a nine-storey tower, was granted planning permission in 2022.
The project was welcomed by councillors as a ‘much–needed’ contribution to the city’s affordable housing need, with councillors stating it was ‘the kind of development that Salford deserves’. But since it was granted, no progress has been made on the site, and it appears the plans have been scrapped as the land was sold off by Zetland earlier this year.
Demolition timeline
The five-week demolition works are due to start around mid-November if the council signs off on the plans. The building will be torn apart by a 10-tonne excavator, starting with the roof section, followed by the walls and floors to ground level.
