Cardiff pub The Plough closes for £250k grandstand revamp

The Plough pub in Whitchurch, Cardiff, will temporarily close its doors this week for a major transformation. Located on the corner of Merthyr Road and Old Church Road, the pub is undergoing a £250,000 makeover.

Reopening as a grandstand sports pub

Due to reopen on October 28, The Plough will return as a 'grandstand' sports pub, with new features designed to deliver a stadium-style experience. The refurbishment will include the installation of multiple large screens, an immersive sound system, and flexible tiered seating to ensure a good view of the action. The beer garden will also be refurbished.

More TVs, a new food menu, and an ordering app will allow the new-look pub to show all key sporting fixtures, including football, rugby, cricket, tennis, F1, darts, horse racing, and more. Regulation dartboards and pool tables will return alongside new competition leagues and free-to-play recreational sessions.

Community and match day offerings

The local community is encouraged to share photographs and items to help celebrate the achievements of local sports stars and teams, past and present.

General manager Laura Leuty said: “We’re so excited to show off the new and improved pub. With a calendar of sports up ahead, The Plough will be the perfect destination to get involved in a big event atmosphere and soak up the action, especially thanks to some amazing new technology, food and drink offers and events.”

A new range of bar food will be introduced, perfect for half-time and larger groups. The 'match day menu' will feature hand-held bites such as chicken wings and nachos, and pub favourites such as sausage and mash and fish and chips, grills and burgers. The Plough has also refreshed its range of drinks, with all draught beers available in two-pint cups.

Local sports teams to benefit

Marston’s has said to have selected The Plough for the grandstand transformation due to its strong involvement with local sports teams, community groups, and charities.

Local sports teams will be able to apply for a 'black card', giving them access to exclusive offers, endless chips on team nights, and rewards for celebrating wins at their local.
