Budget hot brush rivals £179 ghd tool in beauty test

A £50 hot brush has won a place on a beauty writer's dressing table, rivalling her beloved £179 ghd Rise tool. Bethan Shufflebotham, Senior Shopping Writer at What's On, tested the Flikt Thermal Hot Brush after spotting it reduced from £75, and found it delivered the bouncy, glossy results she wanted.

The Flikt vs the ghd Rise

The ghd Rise hot brush was previously one of Shufflebotham's favourite tools, so much so that she bought one for her mum at Christmas. However, at £179, it is not a budget-friendly buy. The Flikt, at £50 with a third off the RRP, caught her attention as a potential gift for sisters and mums this festive season, providing it lived up to its promise of 'salon-worthy bounce and shine'.

The Flikt Thermal Hot Brush is designed to add volume, smooth hair and fight frizz, and can create curls with certain techniques. It styles and smooths at the same time, removing the need for straighteners or curling irons.

Adjustable heat gives the edge

The biggest advantage the Flikt has over the ghd is heat control. The ghd Rise has one optimal styling temperature of 185°C, maintaining a consistent temperature through its ultra-zone technology. The Flikt, however, offers adjustable heat from 80°C to 220°C, with the temperature shown on an LCD screen.

Lower settings are ideal for fine hair like Shufflebotham's, while higher settings could suit thicker or stubborn hair. She noted the buttons are easy to knock, accidentally lowering the heat at one point. The Flikt also has a larger 38mm barrel compared with the Rise's 32mm, though Shufflebotham did not notice a huge difference in the final results.

Results and verdict

Shufflebotham completed her hair in 20 minutes and achieved a bouncy, effortless wave. The ceramic glaze barrel helped heat evenly and reduce frizz, while the Anti-Scald Nylon Bristles protected her scalp and did not snag. The cord is 2.5m, slightly shorter than the Rise's 2.7m, which she noticed as less flexibility when styling.

For £50, Shufflebotham said the Flikt is seriously impressive, with a finish exactly as hoped and an adjustable temperature she appreciates for her fine hair. The Flikt Thermal Hot Brush is available for £50 for a limited time.
