Sweltering Brits consumed 27 million pints during England's lackluster World Cup draw with Ghana, delivering the nation's pubs their biggest midweek sales explosion in two years. Up to 19 million supporters tuned in to watch the Three Lions' second group match, with analysts estimating fans spent a total of £237m on booze and barbecues for the event.
Record Midweek Sales Boosted by Heatwave
Boosted by a heatwave, pubs braced for their busiest midweek night since Euro 2024. Approximately two million drinkers crammed into England's 35,000 pubs for the game, according to industry estimates. Experts calculated that 13 million pints were drunk in pubs—6 million more than a typical midweek evening—while another 14 million were consumed at football-themed house parties.
Spending Surge on Food and Drink
Research by spending experts Vouchercodes revealed that £168m was spent on food and drink for house parties, with an additional £69m or more spent in pubs. Clair Hughes of Vouchercodes noted ahead of the match: “A midweek kick-off won’t deter Brits from spending big for England.”
Interest in England Team Soars
Interest in Thomas Tuchel's team has exploded since their thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia in the opening game, widely regarded as the match of the tournament so far. Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, encouraged fans to head to their local for the upcoming Panama game on Saturday: “The best way to enjoy the match is down the pub with friends and fellow fans. I’d encourage people to head to their local and cheer on England.”
Schools Accommodate Sleepy Students
Schools braced for sleepy children in lessons on Wednesday after many stayed up late for the match. Castle Hill Primary School in Basingstoke, Hampshire, sent a letter to parents stating: “We understand children may wish to stay up to watch matches so the morning after England games they can arrive at 9.30am.”
