The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has announced plans to close around 150 of its high street stores across the UK, with the first closures confirmed as part of a major restructuring programme. The charity cited rising operating costs and shifting consumer behaviour as key drivers behind the decision.
First Stores to Close
The first branch to shut will be in Hawick, Scotland, which is set to close later in July 2026. Customers can continue to shop and donate items until the store permanently closes. Other confirmed closures include stores in Rhyl and Bangor in Wales, and Worksop in England.
Under the current timeline, approximately 90 stores will close by March 2027, with the remaining closures completed by March 2028.
Impact on Staff and Volunteers
Dr Charmaine Griffiths, the charity's chief executive, acknowledged the emotional impact of the closures, stating: "Our shops mean so much to our colleagues, brilliant volunteers and communities across the UK." She added: "We know this will be a difficult time for our dedicated colleagues and volunteers in affected stores and emphasise our deep appreciation and gratitude for all they have done for BHF and the communities they serve."
The BHF has pledged to support affected staff through redeployment opportunities wherever possible. Volunteers at closing branches will also be offered the chance to move to nearby stores or take on alternative roles within the charity.
Challenging Trading Environment
Dr Griffiths noted that the charity, like many retailers, is facing an "exceptionally challenging trading environment" as rising costs continue to pressure the high street. The restructuring aims to reshape the BHF's retail network for long-term sustainability.
Community Role
BHF stores play a vital role in local communities, providing a place for people to donate unwanted items, volunteer, and help raise funds to support those affected by heart and circulatory diseases. The closures represent a significant blow to the UK high street, which has seen numerous retail closures in recent years.
