Storing bread with a celery stick can keep it fresh and mould-free for longer, according to food storage specialists at Green Wraps. The simple trick involves placing one or two celery stems inside the bread bag or container.
Why celery works
The experts explained, “The unique properties of celery make it an interesting candidate for preserving bread. One of the most remarkable properties of celery is its high water content, which is about 95% of its weight.”
“By placing one or two celery stems inside a bread bag, the moisture within the stems can be transferred to the surrounding environment.”
Mould prevention and more
Celery also has natural antibacterial properties thanks to compounds like phthalates and apigenin, which help ward off mould. Additionally, it releases ethylene gas, a plant hormone that slows down starch degradation in bread, preserving its fresh texture.
How to store bread with celery
To use the trick, place one or two celery sticks alongside the loaf if keeping it on the worktop. Keep bread in a bread bin, fabric bag, or paper bag where possible, as it requires a ventilated yet protected space.
Avoid leaving bread in its original supermarket wrapping, as plastic retains excessive moisture and encourages mould. Position bread storage away from windows, cookers, or other heat sources, since warmth accelerates staling. Resist refrigerating bread, as cold causes starch molecules to crystallise, speeding up staleness.
By storing bread with celery in a cool corner of the kitchen, freshness can be extended by several days or potentially up to a week beyond its usual lifespan.
