A prominent food vlogger has declared that the finest supermarket breakfast in Britain is not found in the giants of the retail sector, but in a boutique northern chain. Gary Hanna, the creator behind the popular YouTube channel GaryEats, awarded a stunning 9/10 score to Booths for its full English breakfast, stating it is "miles ahead of the competition".
Disappointment with the Giants Turns to Northern Delight
Gary Hanna had been distinctly unimpressed with the breakfast offerings from some of the UK's largest supermarket chains, including Tesco and Marks & Spencer. His opinion shifted dramatically after a trip to the north of England, prompted by countless recommendations from his followers. He visited the Booths store in the Cumbrian market town of Kendal to put their famous breakfast to the test.
Booths, a family-run chain with 26 stores concentrated in northern England, particularly in Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria, and Yorkshire, offered a completely different experience. Determined to be thorough, Gary placed a large order on 31 December 2025, including a sausage sandwich, a full English breakfast, a fruit teacake, crumpets, and a pot of tea.
A Breakfast Built on "Quality Ingredients"
The centrepiece of his review was the classic full English, priced at £9.50. The plate was loaded with sausages, generous bacon, black pudding, tomatoes, beans, hash browns, and two thick slices of toast. Gary's primary critique of other supermarket cafes had been their use of subpar components, but he found no such issue at Booths.
He was effusive in his praise, highlighting each element. "That is a stunning pork sausage. Very, very meaty. Quality," he said. He commended the "perfectly salted" thick-cut bacon and the substantial toast, noting it wasn't the usual thin sliced bread. Even the black pudding received approval for its authentic, iron-rich taste.
The Verdict: A Clear Winner Emerges
After finishing his meal, Gary delivered his final assessment. He urged all supermarkets to empower their chefs with quality ingredients to elevate their food. Declaring the Booths breakfast an easy winner, he said, "The best, easily, supermarket breakfast I've had bar none... I'm going to give you eight and a half, nine, something along those lines."
He concluded by praising not just the food, but the entire experience—the staff, the atmosphere, and the standards. His review suggests that for a truly superior supermarket breakfast, consumers might need to look beyond the usual national names and seek out establishments that prioritise ingredient quality over everything else.
