UK households looking to stay warm this autumn and winter without relying on central heating can turn to a portable gadget from B&M that costs roughly 17.1p per hour to run. The 650W Grey Blaupunkt Five Fin Oil-Filled Radiator is priced at £24 and is designed to warm only the room in use, a practice known as "zone heating."
As autumn weather takes hold and winter approaches, many households are seeking cost-effective ways to manage energy bills without sacrificing comfort. While central heating remains the traditional option, heating an entire property can be an expensive luxury. Budget-friendly alternatives like electric heaters and oil-filled radiators are often more affordable, and experts recommend heating people rather than the whole home. Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis advocates the strategy of "heat the human, not the home."
Low running costs and heat retention
Operating at maximum capacity, the radiator consumes 0.65 kilowatts of power per hour. Under the current UK energy price cap, this translates to roughly 17.1p per hour of continuous use. Unlike standard fan heaters that cool down immediately when switched off, oil-filled radiators retain heat well. The internal thermal fluid absorbs warmth and continues to radiate it into the room long after the unit is unplugged.
By using the adjustable thermostat and allowing the radiator to cycle on and off, households can keep a home office or small bedroom warm for a fraction of the cost of running a full central heating system. The radiator measures 24 x 14 x 39cm and weighs 2.62kg.
Strategic use for maximum savings
Experts note that the biggest savings come from strategic use. Turning down the main household thermostat by a few degrees and using the Blaupunkt radiator to spot-heat a specific workspace can reduce monthly utility bills.
In the product description, B&M says: "Heat your home with the Blaupunkt Five Fin Oil-Filled Radiator. Designed with five heating fins, this compact radiator delivers steady, reliable warmth, making it ideal for bedrooms, home offices, and other medium to small spaces."
"Its adjustable thermostat allows you to easily set the desired temperature, ensuring maximum comfort while being environmentally friendly. And with an efficient output of 650W, you can enjoy cosy temperatures without worrying about your energy bills. Lightweight and portable, this radiator is easy to move from room to room ensuring you stay warm and comfortable during those extra chilly days."
Additional heater option
The oil-filled radiator is not the only Blaupunkt heater B&M sells. Shoppers can also buy a Blaupunkt High Power Fan Heater 3000W for the same price of £24. B&M says: "Save money on your energy bills with an electric heater from B&M Stores. This compact fan heater is as versatile as it is powerful."
