B&M Bargains is moving from its Hall Street location in Carmarthen town centre to a larger unit on Glanyrafon Road, just off the A40, after 15 years of trading. The move leaves behind a significant retail space in the heart of Carmarthen, which was previously home to Woolworths, Ethel Austin, and Life&Style.
Details of the Relocation
The new store will occupy the former B&Q building, which was vacated earlier this year when B&Q relocated to Parc Pensarn retail park. B&M has placed banners outside the new site advertising an opening date of August 22, 2026, with the current store closing on August 15. The new unit offers over 26,957 sq ft of sales space and includes a 10,098 sq ft garden centre.
Impact on Carmarthen Town Centre
The departure of B&M from Hall Street raises concerns about the future of the town centre. The unit is one of the largest retail spaces in Carmarthen and has been occupied by B&M since 2011. Chair of Carmarthen Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Jack Yeates, expressed sadness over the move: "It's always sad when businesses decide to move just outside of town. As a chamber we hope that the Hall Street shop isn't vacant for long and doesn't join the list of empty properties within town because it is a large space to be left unused."
Background and Previous Tenants
The Hall Street unit was originally a Woolworths store until its collapse in early 2009. It then briefly housed Ethel Austin and Life&Style before B&M opened in early 2011. B&Q's previous move from the A40 site was due to the expiry of a lease agreement, prompting its relocation to a smaller unit at Parc Pensarn, which formerly housed Poundstretcher and Laura Ashley.
B&M's Statement
B&M Bargains confirmed the relocation in a statement: "B&M Hall Street will be relocating to Glanyrafon Road. The new store will be much bigger and better with over 26,957 sq ft of sales space offering an even bigger selection of great bargains from grocery, toiletries, and health and beauty to toys, homeware, and DIY. The store will also boast its own 10,098 sqft garden centre selling hundreds of plant varieties and gardening essentials. The current Carmarthen store will shut its tills for the final time on Saturday, August 15, but customers won’t have to wait much longer to get back in store as the new site will open its doors at 8am on Saturday, August 22."
