B&M is selling a compact halogen heater for £20 that costs from just over 10p per hour to run, offering households a low-cost way to stay warm without switching on the central heating. The Blaupunkt Three Bar Oscillating Halogen Heater has been reduced from £24 to £20 and is designed to heat specific rooms rather than a whole house.
How much does it cost to run?
According to current Ofgem energy price cap data, running the 1200W heater on its highest setting costs roughly 31p per hour. On the lowest setting, using one bar at 400W, it costs just over 10p per hour, while the medium 800W setting costs approximately 21p per hour.
More precise figures, based on the current average UK Ofgem Energy Price Cap standard variable electricity rate of 26.11p per kWh, put the running costs at:
- Low Setting (400W): 10.44p per hour (one bar)
- Medium Setting (800W): 20.89p per hour (two bars)
- High Setting (1200W): 31.33p per hour (all three bars)
From October 1, 2026, the Ofgem price cap will rise slightly to 26.32p per kWh, which would increase the maximum running cost to about 31.58p per hour at the highest setting.
How the heater works
Halogen heaters are widely regarded as highly efficient because they provide direct, instant heat. Unlike traditional fan heaters that warm the air, halogen bulbs emit infrared radiation that directly warms objects and people in front of them.
The heater measures 36 x 26 x 48cm and weighs 1.3kg. It is not designed to replace a full home heating system, but B&M says it provides a quick, easy and low-cost supplement for home offices, living rooms, or bedrooms.

Shoppers can browse more heaters on the B&M website, but customers cannot place orders online. To buy, people will need to visit their nearest branch, and they can check stock availability using the retailer's online postcode tool.
