British clothing and outerwear brand Berghaus, which went viral during the Oasis reunion, has announced it will open its first standalone store in the North West in Manchester. The new 2,750 sq ft store is set to debut in the Manchester Arndale in August, marking a significant expansion for the brand.
Berghaus and Oasis: A Viral Connection
Berghaus captured the attention of Oasis fans in 2024 through a collaboration with Liam Gallagher. The frontman sported a Trango jacket as part of a campaign shot by renowned British photographer Alasdair McLellan. The £400 outfit, promoted with a mural on Oldham Street, sold out in 72 hours, becoming one of the fastest-selling pieces in the brand's history. The campaign even sparked a tongue-in-cheek spoof from Lidl due to comparisons over its colour palette.
The Berghaus campaign highlighted Gallagher's long-time love for the brand. He had previously sparked a fashion craze in 1997 after wearing a red Meru jacket during an Oasis show in Oslo. A reimagined version of the coat was relaunched in 2025 as part of a 'concert' collection timed with the Oasis reunion gigs.
Berghaus: A British Heritage Brand
Founded in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1966, Berghaus takes its name from the German word for 'mountain house'. The brand is known for its climbing gear, equipment, footwear, bags, and accessories. Over the years, its clothing has been worn by elite athletes and famous faces, including Kate Middleton and Keanu Reeves.
Currently, Berghaus sells online and through retailers like GO Outdoors, John Lewis, and Blacks. It operates only two outlet stores in Gretna and Gloucester. The new Manchester store will be its first standalone shop in the North West. Signage promoting the store features a nod to the Gallagher campaign, with a shoulder shot of the Trango jacket.
Industry Leaders Comment on the Expansion
Franck Denglos, EMEA President of Pentland Brands, said: '60 years after Berghaus was founded in the North of England, opening our first standalone in the North West feels like a natural homecoming. As a bold, outdoor and British brand, we're excited to put down roots in Manchester and connect with consumers in one of the UK's most vibrant retail destinations. Manchester Arndale's scale, energy and reach make it the perfect stage for the next chapter of the Berghaus story.'
The arrival of Berghaus will join other top brands at the Arndale, including Arc'teryx, Alo Yoga, Pro:Direct, GARAGE, and Represent. Tech giant DJI is also set to open inside the Arndale this summer.
Scott Linard, Portfolio Manager for M&G Real Estate, said: 'Securing Berghaus for its first standalone store in the North West is another major endorsement of Manchester Arndale and the strength of our retail offer. The brand's decision to open its first brand store UK location here reflects the confidence major retailers have in the destination and the continued demand we're seeing for premium outdoor and sportswear brands.'
Steve Gray, Head of European Retail Asset Management at Global Mutual, added: 'Berghaus joining Manchester Arndale is a clear example of how leading retailers are responding to evolving consumer trends and investing in standout physical retail destinations. The brand is a fantastic addition to our lineup and further enhances the scheme's appeal to Gen Z consumers who are driving the popularity of gorpcore and outdoor-inspired fashion.'
