Award-winning south Liverpool independent coffee shop Bean There has officially opened the doors to its new takeaway venture, The Side Door on Penny Lane. The new addition to the family-run business opened on June 24 after a successful soft launch on June 19.
New Location and Offerings
The Side Door is located at 121 Penny Lane, a short distance from Bean There's original Smithdown Road site. It offers a dedicated destination for takeaway sandwiches, speciality coffee and breakfast items. Customers can expect freshly baked focaccia sandwiches filled with favourites including brisket and fried chicken, hot breakfast options, overnight oats, granola pots, pastries, salads, homemade bakes and speciality coffee. The menu also features grilled cheese sandwiches made using Bean There's award-winning sourdough.
Expansion of a Local Success
Bean There has become a popular coffee and food spot since owners Candice and Andrew Mulligan opened on the corner of Smithdown Road in 2017. As well as the original café and new takeaway site, the couple also operate a coffee shop and bakery at 62 Rose Lane, where much of the bread and pastries sold across the business are made fresh each day.
Opening Hours and Pre-Order Service
The Side Door is open earlier than the sit-in shops, with opening hours from 7am to 3pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 3pm on Saturdays and 8am until midday on Sundays. The Smithdown Road shop is open 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm on weekends. The Rose Lane shop is open 8am to 5pm on weekdays, 7am to 3pm on Saturdays and 8am until 3pm on Sundays. The expansion aims to cater to quick lunches, picnic-goers and quality coffee on the go, with customers able to pre-order food and drink online.
Recognition and Customer Response
Following a busy opening day, Bean There said on social media: "What a day! Thank you so much to everyone for all of the love and well wishes today. We had such a great time." Earlier this year, the business's head baker Sebastian Zimmer-Lachman earned national recognition after his white sourdough received a Gold award at Britain’s Best Loaf Awards, with only two other bakeries in the UK achieving the same accolade in the plain sourdough category.
