Celebrity chef Anthony Demetre has closed his King's Cross restaurant Vermuteria after eight years of trading, leaving fans devastated.
Restaurant closure announced
The Great British Menu star, who appeared on the 2010 series of the BBC show, opened Vermuteria in Coal Drops Yard, King's Cross, eight years ago. The all-day restaurant, cafe and bar was inspired by European eateries in Italy, France and Spain and welcomed guests from around the world.
Anthony and co-owner Michael Sodeau decided to close the eatery this month. A statement on the restaurant's social media account read: "After eight wonderful years at Coal Drops Yard, VERMUTERIA has had to close its doors for one final time. We are devastated for our incredible staff, loyal customers, friends and supporters."
Fans react with sadness
The statement continued: "It's been an incredible journey and we are thankful that so many of you were able to join us and create lasting memories. The doors have closed on this chapter but the fire and hunger remain. Forza..."
Fans expressed their heartbreak over the news. One commented: "Oh, that's such sad news. A huge loss. I loved visiting you. Many, many thanks for all the wonderful times and happy memories we've had with you. And thank you for introducing me to Negronis."
Another added: "It feels wrong to 'like' this [post] - what heartbreaking news. Many a wonderful time was had at Vermuteria and it was always a pleasure to visit. What an incredible team - I hope something wonderful is on the horizon."
A third shared: "Oh man, not visited since moving out of London but was thinking about you just the other day!"
Future plans unclear
Anthony did not mention any future plans to open another restaurant, but he has been giving updates on his work at Wild Honey St James, which was awarded a star in the Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland 2022. The chef also updated his personal Instagram biography, tagging the Michelin-starred restaurant and adding: "If I'm not cooking, I'm probably on the bike."
Wild Honey St James is part of the Sofitel London St James hotel but operates as a separate restaurant with its own entrance on Pall Mall.
