Bar & Block Newcastle cuts prices by 40% before closure

Bar & Block, a steakhouse in Newcastle city centre, is offering 40% off main meals until Bank Holiday Monday, August 31, ahead of its permanent closure next Thursday, September 3. The discount applies to food from the main menu and Sunday Roasts, with a minimum £50 spending requirement.

Closure part of Whitbread's wider plan

The Newcastle eatery is one of 20 Bar & Block establishments across the UK that will cease trading in the coming weeks. The widespread closures follow Whitbread, Bar & Block's parent company, shutting nearly 2,000 of its sites, as reported by ChronicleLive in April.

Bar & Block first opened at the end of 2019, just along from The Gate, months before Covid hit and all hospitality businesses were forced to shut their doors for months. ChronicleLive first reported in early May that the restaurant would close later in the year.

Other venues affected

A whole range of different venues will cease trading by the autumn, including Beefeater restaurants, such as the busy one in Whitley Bay, and Brewers Fayre pubs. An estimated 3,800 jobs will be lost in the process.

Whitbread said its plan to overhaul its restaurants forms part of a new five-year strategy aiming to save £250m in the face of cost pressures from business rates and national insurance contributions.

How the discount works

Everyone who has received the email will be able to show a code to their server to get the discount. The offer is not available on The Block Steak Sampler, Ultimate Surf + Turf, Breakfast, Kids' Menu, Lunch and Early Dinner menu, Bottomless or Brunch menu.
