Asda has recalled 11 ladies' handbags because they may contain excessive phthalates, posing a serious chemical risk. The Office for Product Safety and Standards has issued an alert, advising owners to stop using the products immediately and return them to any Asda store for a full refund.
Serious chemical risk identified
The recalled bags may contain excessive concentrations of Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). The Office for Product Safety and Standards stated: "The product presents a serious chemical risk because it contains excessive concentrations of Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). Phthalates may harm the health of children, possibly causing damage to the reproductive system."
The products do not meet the requirements of the REACH Regulations 2008. The Office added: "The product has been recalled from end users by ASDA. We recommend that owners stop using the product immediately. Return the product to any ASDA store for a full refund."
Asda's response and refund details
Asda said: "At the time of shipment, products successfully passed all required tests. However, subsequent testing has identified that they may contain phthalates at levels exceeding the permitted regulatory limit."
The supermarket added: "Certain phthalates, including Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are subject to regulatory restrictions because prolonged exposure above specified limits may pose potential health risks and possibly cause damage to the reproductive system. While no safety incidents have been reported, we are taking this action to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and to maintain our commitment to consumer safety."
Customers who purchased any of the bags can return them to their nearest store for a full refund without a receipt. Asda apologised for any inconvenience and directed further queries to Asda Customer Relations on 0330 053 0111.
