Asda fuel offer: £40 shop gives 5p per litre off

Asda customers have until the end of Saturday to use a promotion offering 5p off per litre of fuel when they spend £40 or more on groceries. The supermarket has confirmed the deal is available at 262 petrol stations across the country, with the voucher automatically credited to the Asda Rewards app.

Fuel Savings and Budget Context

The offer comes as oil prices have risen beyond 100 dollars a barrel, driven by the continuing conflict in the Middle East, with no indication of the war ending or the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping route reopening. This follows the Chancellor's announcement in yesterday's Budget that a planned rise in fuel duty was cancelled to ease the cost of living burden on motorists.

John Healey confirmed in his Budget address to the Commons that the 5p reduction in fuel duty, which had been due to expire on 31 December, would now be extended until July 2027. The Asda promotion must be redeemed by 31 October.

How the Asda Offer Works

Customers who made purchases of £40 or more in a single in-store transaction between 23 September and 14 October were given a 5p-per-litre fuel voucher through their Asda Rewards app, valid for one fuel purchase until October 31 at participating Asda petrol stations. The scheme has the potential to save motorists up to £3 each time they fill a typical 60-litre family car and is available at 262 participating Asda and Asda Express sites selling Asda-branded fuel.

Rachel Eyre, Chief Customer Officer at Asda, said: "The weekly shop and the cost of filling up the car are two of the biggest everyday expenses for many households. Customers told us how much they valued this Rewards offer when we ran it earlier this year. We're pleased to bring it back as part of our continued investment to help keep the cost of feeding and fuelling the family down."

Pump Prices and Driver Reactions

The RAC has disclosed that the average price of diesel has risen to 198.79p per litre, while unleaded currently stands at 172.92p per litre. Following the Budget, RAC senior policy officer Rod Dennis said "While drivers may breathe a mild sigh of relief knowing that fuel duty isn't going up, many are likely to be disappointed the Chancellor didn't go further to support them."

RAC research published yesterday showed nearly two-in-three regular drivers wanted cuts to duty or VAT on fuel, with a similar proportion now cutting back on other spending because of the high cost of fuel. "A freeze only avoids making an already difficult situation worse – it doesn't make filling up any cheaper. And it's worth remembering that pump prices still soared this summer, despite fuel duty being at this very same reduced rate."

Drivers will now have to hope for an easing of the international conflicts that have pushed up oil prices and disrupted fuel supplies if pump prices are to come down in a meaningful way. "In the meantime, they can ensure they always pay the lowest price for filling up by using the free myRAC app to locate the cheapest forecourts up and down the country."

The Government has extended the 5p fuel duty discount through to 1 July 2027, despite the reduction originally being scheduled to expire at the close of this year. Company car drivers are set to receive greater financial relief from April next year, with the Budget confirming that the 55p per mile rate for the first 10,000 miles would be made permanent. For mileage exceeding 10,000, the rate will increase to 35p per mile from 6 April 2027.
