Ark Manchester, one of the last two remaining nightclubs on Deansgate Locks, will close its doors for good, dealing another blow to the once-thriving nightlife strip. Owner Stonegate Group confirmed the closure, stating the business is 'no longer commercially viable'.
A Fixture for 12 Years
Ark had been a staple on Deansgate Locks for approximately 12 years, operating at the former Missoula site. It was part of a vibrant row of clubs alongside The Comedy Store, Revolution, and Lola Lo, situated on the opposite side of the Rochdale Canal from Whitworth Street West.
This area was once one of Manchester's busiest nightlife hotspots. However, a wave of closures in recent years has left only Ark and Popworld, both now open only on Friday and Saturday nights. With Ark's closure, Popworld will be the sole remaining venue on the Deansgate Locks development.
Closure Date and Reasons
While an exact closure date has not been confirmed, it is understood to happen within weeks. A spokesperson for Stonegate Group told the Manchester Evening News: 'The hospitality sector continues to face significant challenges. After careful consideration, and despite our best efforts, Ark Manchester is no longer commercially viable and we have taken the difficult decision to close the venue.'
The spokesperson added: 'Our priority is to support our hard-working team during this time, and we would like to thank them for their commitment and dedication. We would also like to thank our guests and the local community for their support over the years.'
Broader Decline of Deansgate Locks
Last year, the Manchester Evening News explored the decline of Deansgate Locks, which was transformed into a nightlife destination in 2000. Factors cited include shifting nightlife habits, the cost of living crisis, and issues with damp in the Grade II-listed structure. These challenges have contributed to the strip's struggles, culminating in Ark's imminent closure.
