Aldi is releasing a new kitchen worktop storage item on Thursday, October 1, that could help people who regularly buy bread keep it fresh for longer. The Crofton Industrial Kitchen Bread Bin will go on sale for £7.99.
Why a bread bin beats the fridge
While many households store a loaf in the refrigerator, food science shows this is not the best way to keep it fresh. A dedicated bread bin has been proven to extend the shelf life and quality of baked goods.
Bread stales due to a chemical process known as starch retrogradation. When baked, the starches in flour absorb water. As the bread cools and ages, those starches recrystallise, releasing moisture and forcing the loaf to turn dry and hard.
Refrigeration actually accelerates this process. The cold environment of a standard fridge causes starch molecules to recrystallise roughly six times faster than they would at room temperature.
How the Aldi Crofton bin works
Leaving bread entirely exposed on a countertop invites drafts that dry it out, while trapping it in airtight plastic containers locks in excessive ambient moisture, creating a breeding ground for premature mould growth.
A bread bin resolves these issues by creating a controlled microclimate. It maintains a stable, dark environment that shields loaves from direct sunlight and temperature changes. Bread bins also help balance ventilation by letting out just enough moisture to prevent condensation and mould, while retaining enough humidity to keep the bread soft.
