Aldi's £5 Magnetic Window Cleaner rivals B&Q's £56 version

Aldi is launching a Magnetic Window Cleaner for £4.99 this Sunday, 20 September, as part of its new 'Laundry and Cleaning' Special Buy collection. The tool bears a strong resemblance to a comparable model at B&Q, which retails for £55.99.

Double-sided design with safety rope

The discount retailer refreshes its Middle Aisle selection every Thursday and Sunday. The Magnetic Window Cleaner comes fitted with a safety rope to prevent drops and damage, and is described as "suitable for windows, cars and shower screens". Shoppers can choose between grey and green colours.

The product description states: "The double-sided magnetic window cleaner makes cleaning windows and glass more efficient and convenient. The triangular design will help you to reach corners and edges." As with every Special Buy offer at Aldi, availability is limited, with the retailer warning: "Once it's gone, it's gone".

Comparable features at B&Q

On the B&Q website, shoppers can find the Magnetic Window Cleaner Double-Sided Glass Magnet Washer Tool, retailing for £55.99. Although stocked by different shops, the two cleaning devices share a comparable look and purpose, both boasting a unique, triangular plastic construction.

This design enables users to manoeuvre the cleaner into narrow window corners that conventional square sponges frequently can't reach. The internal mechanics of both products are also the same, with each side containing a water-absorbent sponge to remove grime, combined with an integrated rubber squeegee to dry the glass and avoid streaking.

Important limitation for double glazing

To stop the exterior section from dropping to the ground should the magnets separate, both the Aldi and B&Q models feature an essential anti-fall safety cord that attaches straight to your wrist. However, shoppers should bear one significant point in mind before buying either version.

Both of these affordable devices are intended exclusively for single-glazed glass or slim panes measuring up to 8mm thick. Since typical contemporary double-glazing is considerably thicker, the magnets in both the Aldi and B&Q models may find it difficult to stay connected across the broader gap. For conventional single panes, both devices should perform adequately.
