Aldi is selling a 'luxury' homeware item that could serve as a budget-friendly alternative for fans of a popular high-end brand. The supermarket is currently offering an array of 'cosy' homeware items now that autumn has arrived, and one particular product may interest Jo Malone enthusiasts.
As part of its 'Hotel Collection' line-up, Aldi is stocking a Pomegranate Luxury Glass Candle for £3.15. The store says the "lovely" candle creates a "relaxing mood" with its "comforting fragrance", which may appeal to anyone staying indoors more as the weather turns cooler and nights become darker earlier.
Two scents available
Shoppers can choose from two scents, including pomegranate and lime, basil and mandarin. The candle comes in a translucent jar with a silver lid and black writing on the front, similar to how Jo Malone presents its candles. Aldi's version weighs 340g.
John Lewis is selling a variety of Jo Malone products, including a 200g jar of Pomegranate Noir Classic and a 200g jar of Lime Basil and Mandarin Classic, both available on the retailer's website for £56 each. Shoppers who enjoy the scent of 'luxury' and the look of high-end homeware without the premium price tag may be interested in Aldi's more affordable version.
Fragrance and performance differences
Both candles feature a blend of red fruits, warm amber, patchouli, and clove. According to fragrance comparisons published by lifestyle sites such as Ideal Home, the scent profiles are remarkably similar.
However, experts note subtle differences in the fragrances. The Aldi version is said to lean slightly sweeter and fruitier, while the original Jo Malone reportedly offers a darker, muskier, and more complex depth.
The primary differences lie in the ingredients and performance. The Aldi Pomegranate Candle uses a dual-wick design and paraffin wax. This ensures an even, clean burn across the top, but the scent throw is slightly less concentrated. In contrast, Jo Malone uses a premium soy-blend wax that creates a more powerful, lingering fragrance that remains in a room long after the wick is extinguished.
Customer feedback
Aldi does not allow shoppers to leave product reviews on its website, so they will need to visit their local store to smell the candle for themselves. However, shoppers can view customer feedback on John Lewis' website for the Jo Malone candles.
Leaving a review of the Lime Basil and Mandarin Classic Candle, one shopper said: "A lovely candle with a gorgeous scent. It was a perfect gift for a family member." A second said: "Excellent perfume at a strike of a match. None that I have found are better. Good range of scents for all tastes."
However, one customer claimed: "It smells only when unlit. For these money you do expect the quality, however no scent at all. I've tried twice to lit up my candle, 4 hours minimum, no result! So don't even think to buy it."
