Aldi's £2.95 Sunscreen Beats Premium Brands in Test

Aldi's own-brand sunscreen costing less than £3 has been named a Which? Best Buy, outperforming more expensive competitors. The Lacura SPF30 Moisturising Sun Lotion, priced at £2.95 for a 200ml bottle, beat premium brands including Ultrasun SPF50+ Kids, which retails at around £23 for 150ml.

Which? Testing and Results

Consumer watchdog Which? tested a range of sunscreens against British Standards for UVA and UVB protection. Aldi's lotion was praised for its "excellent protection" and "solid, affordable" performance. It also received a four-star sustainability rating for its UV filter impact and packaging recyclability.

Comparison with Other Brands

The Which? review included big brands such as Nivea, Hawaiian Tropic, and Garnier, as well as supermarket offerings from Lidl and Asda. Aldi's product emerged as a top performer despite its low price.

Context of UK Heatwave

The recognition comes as the UK experiences soaring temperatures, prompting renewed advice for sun safety. Health experts recommend using sunscreen with adequate SPF and UVA protection, reapplying regularly, and combining it with shade and protective clothing during extreme heat.

Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said: "With red weather warnings in place, it’s more important than ever that families take sun safety seriously. That means not only applying high factor sun cream, but also seeking shade where possible, covering up with protective clothing and staying hydrated throughout the day." She added that Aldi's award-winning sun care range offers customers "great-value protection" without compromising on quality.

Product Range and Availability

Alongside the Best Buy-winning SPF30 lotion, Aldi's Lacura sun care range includes SPF50+ sensitive lotions, face sunscreens, dry mist sprays, children’s roll-ons, and after-sun products. Prices start from £1.65, with the range available in stores nationwide.
