Aldi has issued a striking prediction for its 1,050 UK stores over June and July, anticipating a surge in beer sales as the FIFA World Cup approaches. The German retailer expects to sell a staggering 74 million cans of beer across the UK during the tournament, which runs from June 11 to July 19.
World Cup Beer Sales Forecast
The 37-day tournament, jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA, kicks off on June 11, with millions of viewers expected worldwide. British households are stocking up on snacks and drinks, while others head to pubs or fan zones to support England in their quest for a first World Cup victory since 1966.
Aldi's prediction equates to over 1,330 cans sold every minute, or enough cans to line the length of 72,705 football pitches end-to-end. The retailer also forecasts sales of more than 14 million pizzas and over nine million packs of crisps during the tournament.
England's Group L Matches
England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, begins their Group L campaign against Croatia on Wednesday, June 17. They will then face Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27. The final is scheduled for July 19 at the New York New Jersey Stadium in the USA.
Aldi's UK Expansion
Aldi operates over 1,050 stores across the UK, with a long-term goal of reaching 1,500. The chain is investing £370 million this year, including £300 million to upgrade 25 stores this summer. Aldi was recently named the UK's Best Value Brand of the Year by Which?.
