Supermarket potato waffle taste test: Aldi beats Birds Eye
Aldi potato waffles beat Birds Eye in supermarket taste test

Aldi has come out on top in a potato waffle taste test, beating Birds Eye and other major supermarkets. The unbranded Aldi waffles were described as thick, tasty and fluffy, with a crispy outside and a flavour very similar to the branded version.

Each Aldi packet contains 12 waffles for £1.45, compared to the 10 in a Birds Eye box, making them better value for money as well as tastier. The waffles scored 10/10 in the test.

How the supermarkets compared

Birds Eye came second with a 9/10 rating. Its waffles had the ideal crispy outside and soft middle, cooked well and were golden when taken out of the oven. They were not dry and packed with the flavour you want from a potato waffle.

Tesco's potato waffles scored 8/10. They were thinner than Asda's but had a much better flavour, were not dry, and had a crunch on the outside with a soft inside. A packet cost £1.65.

Lower-ranked options

Asda's potato waffles scored 5/10. They looked similar to Birds Eye's but were much thicker, firm with a pleasant crunch and a fluffy potato inside, yet too dry to rank higher. They cost £1.44.

Lidl came last with a 1/10 rating. Its waffle was described as far too tasteless, coming out of the oven wrinkly and cracked. While it had a firm crunch, the inside was too dry.

All supermarket packets contained 12 waffles, compared to the 10 in the Birds Eye box.
