New sachets land in stores October 11

Aldi is introducing Latte and Frappe Duo Sachets, priced at 99p each, arriving in stores on October 11. An Aldi spokesman said: "These delicious drinks are the perfect way to embrace cozy season."

The Latte Duo Sachets include the Pumpkin Spice Latte, described as a quintessential autumn classic with warming seasonal spices, alongside the Brown Sugar Latte, which brings 'deliciously deep caramel notes to every sip'.

History of the Pumpkin Spice Latte

Starbucks created the Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) in 2003, growing it from an experimental autumn product into a seasonal phenomenon that defined modern beverage marketing. Spice blends labelled "pumpkin pie spice" (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, and allspice) were commercially popularised by McCormick in 1934. In the 1990s, smaller coffee shops and spice companies began pairing traditional pie spices with coffee syrup.

Following the success of the Peppermint Mocha, Peter Dukes led Starbucks' beverage product development team in creating a distinct autumn drink. During tasting trials in the "Liquid Lab" in Seattle, the team poured espresso shots directly over real pumpkin pie slices to understand how the flavours interacted. Starbucks tested the drink in 100 stores across Vancouver and Oklahoma City. Originally almost named the "Fall Harvest Latte," it was rebranded to Pumpkin Spice Latte (abbreviated internally as PSL). It immediately outperformed seasonal sales projections.

Starbucks' seasonal success and Aldi's offering

The beverage launched across all Starbucks locations in the US and Canada in 2004, quickly becoming the company's most popular seasonal beverage. Brought to the UK, Starbucks has sold over 600 million Pumpkin Spice Lattes since its inception. In the UK, a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte typically costs between £4.90 and £6.60, depending on size, location, and ordering method.

Aldi is also selling Frappe Duo Sachets in Brown Sugar or Maple Hazelnut flavours for chilled treats. Each sachet comes with portioned toppings, including chocolate sprinkles and mini marshmallows.

Aldi's Latte and Frappe Duo Sachets will be available in stores from October 11, while stock lasts.
